The Art of Murals
As an artist, you always want to try something new "one day", but sometimes you need that client to push you into a new medium or project that you've always wanted to do. This happened to me before my first 3 x murals.
'Solstays' have 3 x Airbnbs located in Trinity Beach, and the manager of the property had a vision of making each garage at each property, a games rooms for guests, mainly families with young kids.
At first when we were discussing the possibility of being painting these murals, I was of course very hesitate to go ahead with a project like this.
I hadn't picked up a paint brush for nearly 2 years, and had been focussing on creating artworks on my iPad at a very small scale.
After negotiating with the client and stating that I would only commit to "one" mural for a start..... I finally had an opportunity to paint on a pretty decent sized wall!!!!! I was super excited, nervous, panicked, thinking "what a I signed up to"!!!!
The FIRST mural May - June 2024
The first mural was a massive learning curve. The biggest hurdle for me, was figuring out what was the best process to execute my first mural.
The first step I did was sketch out the design with a lead pencil (I know right!). This process was what I was use to, on a small scale, and not on a brick white wall. Of course the lead pencil was smudging but at least I had paint to cover it all up.
It surprised me how easy I found sketching the design out freehand. I placed the design proof on illustrator and used the line tool to measure certain elements, and then measured on the wall. It was tricky at the start but got the hang of it in the end.
Looking back to this first mural, I can already see how far I have come with each step and what did and didn't work. Thats the beauty if trying something new... you always learn something new!!
I was very happy with the final product of my first mural, and so was the client thankfully.... so I committed to the next second and third murals after that.
